Submission Guidelines

Goals

QuaesitUM is a blind-reviewed annual journal where undergraduate students from all disciplines can publish research they have conducted at the University of Memphis.

Eligibility

QuaesitUM considers submissions from any undergraduate student who has conducted research at University of Memphis. Eligibility extends to those who have graduated within the last three semesters. The research reported must reflect project(s) associated with a University of Memphis program (e.g. summer research program, academic class). Submitted texts may be single or co-authored, but the primary author should be an undergraduate. In cases where undergraduate students have contributed to larger research projects, the submission should highlight the undergraduates’ contribution to the larger study.

Content

Papers must discuss rigorous analysis of some type of data performed by the author(s). Submissions should contain within the body of the text a section in which research methodology is described in detail.

All submitted text is to be the sole creation of the author(s) with the exception of correctly cited paraphrases and properly indicated quotations. Co-authored submissions are acceptable as long as the primary author is an undergraduate.

Any research involving human subjects must have approval from the appropriate Institutional Review Board. Submitting authors are responsible for adhering to IRB guidelines. Check with your faculty advisor for further information.

QuaesitUM understands that disciplines differ in the way that they present research. For this reason, there is not a minimum or maximum article length. Submissions with fewer than 8000 words are preferred, however.

Submissions may not be under review for publication elsewhere. Authors retain copyright of their work and may publish their papers elsewhere after their Volume of Quaesitum is published, provided the requirements of all parties are satisfied. Given the hard work that our editorial team puts into each paper prior to publication, if you publish your work elsewhere we ask that you in include an acknowledgement of Quaesitum and its editorial staff.

Format

All submissions must conform to the following guidelines. Any submissions that do not will be rejected.

  1. Remove all occurrences of author(s) names from the manuscript.

  2. Include a cover sheet that contains author name(s), date, title and one of the following categories:

    • Life and Health Sciences
    • Physical and Applied Sciences
    • Math/Computer Science/Engineering
    • Social and Behavioral Sciences
    • Humanities
    • Professional

  3. Follow this cover sheet with a page containing an abstract of no more than 150 words.

  4. All submissions must be in .docx or .doc format. Use the style (APA, MLA or Chicago) most appropriate for your area of research.

  5. Regardless of the style used, all papers should conform to the following criteria:

    • Single-space the body of the text.
    • Use 12 point Times New Roman.
    • Include page numbers on all pages except for the title page.
    • Include a references page that follows the appropriate citation format for your field of study.

  6. Figures and Tables

    • Provide a separate file for each table and figure.
    • Files must be a minimum of 300 pixels per inch (ppi).
    • Files must be 1200 pixels wide.
    • Figures must be JPEG, TIFF, PNG, EPS or PDF files.
    • Tables may be submitted in the formats listed above for figures.
    • Tables may also be submitted as separate Word or Excel documents.
    • Do not embed figures and tables in the body of the text.
    • Label all tables and figures and provide a corresponding caption at the appropriate location in your text.

Review Process

All submissions are evaluated by an editorial review board. After this initial assessment, approved papers are assessed via a double-blind review from academic experts in the appropriate discipline. Final selection decisions are left to the editorial staff. The double-blind review process means that both the authors and the reviewers remain anonymous. This is the reason for requiring that all names be omitted from the body of each submission.

Deadline for Submissions

Papers must be submitted by the first Friday of the Spring semester of a given year to be included in that year’s volume.
